Why I am afraid of Hell
I am afraid that God will probably not like this, either that, or He's upstairs sadly laughing at my understanding of Hell. Either way.

Allow me to explain. This afternoon, from 1 up until the present I have been working on statistics homework. This work, which I have almost completed, is not the mindless droll of abc guessing, nor the simple plug and chug of mathematics. Instead, it is a hybrid of archaic english and mis-guided mathematical principles, which leave all but the best minds in a pile of rotten dribble, festering upon themselves.

The homework in question has 7 problems, of which I have completed 6. The first problem was a simple matter of grammatical semantics, as was the second. Both of these problems probably took me less than 4 min. This leaves 2 hours and 56 min for the other 5 problems. Three took a while, though that was more of a matter of basic computer programming via EXCEL. Once the program was figured, the rest became a bit of a breeze...plug and chug computer style if you will. All in all, I would allow probably the better part of 2 hours to problems 3 and 4, with the exception of the graphs...which I am getting to. All of this was completed during a break between classes, which was 2 hours long.

And now my dearest friends, we come to a point where I realize that Hell must have something to do with running statistical data and being forced to find some program on the internet which allows the user to compose a -box plot- graph. Finding the program was brief, figuring out how to use it, and assimilating my data into something that came across as readable...that's what has taken up the past 3 hours of my time. I have spent at best 1 hour on each problem, trying to work through it to the point that I could at least make it function. Thus far, I would count my successes as mild, perhaps even moderate if I am in a generous mood. Alas, there is one question left...number 6.

Shall I state it for you? If the variable X, has a mean (M) of 10, and a standard deviation of 2, What would be the mean and standard deviation of the new variable Y if Y was created by multiplying each value of X by 5 and then adding 4?

I believe that the first step is to find which values of X may contribute to both the mean and the SD, however, without some integer that represents the members of X, there is no way I can foresee to solve this problem. and so, I am at a loss, awaiting the return of some instructor whom I can calmly attack to find an answer or at least a heading in a more correct direction.

May you _NEVER_ have to do statistics in your life.

I admit I find it interesting that so many math/science-minded people have problems with statistics, and so many English/language-minded people don't. I took AP Stat in high school and made a perfect score on its exam (so I got college credit for it). But I had to retake precal when I started my undergrad, failed calculus, etc. The only other math I did really well in was finite.

That observation made, I can't help you out. I haven't touched stat since high school. Sorry. =/

Good luck! I hope the instructor contacts you soon.

*snuggles* I have actually come to the conclusion that Stat is actually an English course cleverly disguised as Math. Thus it would make sense that math/science people hate it, and those English/History people would love it.

*shrugs* Actually I was going to ask you if you had taken it and how you had done...I personally believe that your great success in this course is a point leaning to my theory.
